Our children

"Our children and our grandchildren are our elders in universe time. They are born into a more complex, more evolved universe than we can experience or than we can know. It is our privilege to see that new world through their eyes."  ~ Buckminster Fuller

Mindful

"Try to be mindful, and let things take their natural course. Then your mind will become still in any surroundings, like a clear forest pool. All kinds of wonderful, rare animals will come to drink at the pool, and you will clearly see the nature of all things. You will see many strange and wonderful things come and go, but you will be still.
This is the happiness of the Buddha."

"When you want to enter a different aspect of Life, you wait for the point at which Particle becomes Wave.  And just at that split second before the Particle is gone and the Wave takes over, you enter between, and you become Energy.  At that point where the wave becomes Particle again, you enter between and you re-become who you were or you make a different choice.  Which is also possible.  I think it is that space which healing occurs." - Paula Underwood Spencer

Story

"It is all a question of story. We are in trouble just now because we do not have a good story. We are in between stories.  The old story, the account of how the world came to be and how we fit into it, is no longer effective.  Yet we have not yet learned the new story. Our traditional story of the Universe sustained us for a long period of time. It shaped our emotional attitudes, provided us with life purpose and energized action. It consecrated suffering and integrated knowledge. We awoke in the morning and knew where we were. We could answer the questions of our children. We could identify crime, punish transgressors. Everything was taken care of because the story was there. It did not necessarily make people good, nor did it take away the pains and stupidities of life or make for unfailing warmth in human associations. It did provide a context in which life could function in a meaningful manner." -Thomas Berry

Kabir

"Between the conscious and unconscious, the mind has put up a swing; all earth creatures, even supernovas, sway between these two trees, and it never winds down. Angels, animals, humans, insects by the million, also the wheeling sun and moon; ages go by, and it goes on. Everything is swinging: heaven, earth, water, fire, and the secret one is slowly growing a body. Kabir saw this for fifteen seconds, and it made him a servant for life."

Listening

Listening is the oldest and perhaps the most powerful tool of healing. It is often through the quality of our listening and not the wisdom of our words that we are able to effect the most profound changes in the people around us. When we listen, we offer with our attention an opportunity for wholeness. Our listening creates sanctuary for the homeless parts within the other person.

Thread

There's a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn't change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can't get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time's unfolding. You don't ever let go of the thread.
William Stafford - Poet Laureat, NEA Fellow

Rigpa

"The mind of clear light (rigpa) is also called "all-empty" because it is beyond the entire scope of conceptual consciousness. Even while you are still seeming to be a sentient being and despite the generation of a great many good and bad conceptions such as manifest desire, hatred, and bewilderment, the diamond mind itself is free from the pollutions of these defilements."

To Love

"To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget." - Arundhati Roy

Marcus

At dawn, when I have trouble getting out of bed, I tell myself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?”  I ask, “Was I born to feel “nice”? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don’t I see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? Am I not willing to do my job as a human being? Why aren’t I running to do what my nature demands? I remind myself of my defining characteristic— what defines all human beings — the need to work with others.

Just that

"The other day I was walking along the river.  The wind was blowing.  Suddenly I thought, Oh!  The air really exists. We know that the air is there, but unless the wind blows against our face, we are not aware of it.  Here in the wind I was suddenly aware, yet it's really there. And the sun too. I was suddenly aware of the sun, shining through the fare trees.  Its warm, its brightness, and all this completely free, completely gratuitous.  Simply there for us to enjoy.  And without my knowing it, completely spontaneously, my two hands came together, and I realized that I was making a deep and reverent bow. And it occurred to me that this is all that matters: that we can bow, take a deep bow. Just that.  Just that." ---Rev. Eido Tai Shimano

No "Self"

"Why are you unhappy? Because 99% of the things you do, think, and feel are about 'your self'
and there isn't one!" -- Wei Wu Wei

Hildegard

"As each moment, and each breath, streams to us and through us, it is clearly seen, deeply felt, fully registered, and released to reveal the next fleeting flickering bundle of impression that stream our way. We come to live like surfers balancing ourselves on a seemingly endless waves of modulating life experiences, like jazz musicians marveling at each nuanced riff of responsive engagement in the streaming jam of life, or like Hildegard of Bingen once said, floating 'like a feather on the breath of God.'"
